Mubadala Investment, the Abu Dhabi-based sovereign wealth fund, is negotiating to invest up to ¥1 trillion (roughly $6.5 to $7 billion) in a proposed AI data center in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The total investment across all participants could reach ¥2 trillion. If built, the facility would have a capacity of approximately 500 MW, making it Japan's largest data center.

Japan has been pursuing an aggressive but largely quiet campaign to become a global hub for AI compute infrastructure. In June 2026, the government released a strategic plan projecting ¥32.7 trillion in combined public and private investment by fiscal year 2035, focused on expanding cloud and data center capacity across the country. The government is backing this push with tax incentives and active courtship of foreign capital. Mubadala's potential involvement represents exactly the kind of deal Tokyo has been chasing.

A Japanese corporate consortium is expected to lead construction and operations, with Mubadala and other international and domestic investors providing the capital. The discussions are still at an early stage, and Mubadala has declined to comment publicly.

The intersection of AI and crypto has been one of the most active investment themes of the past two years. Tokens tied to decentralized compute, such as those powering GPU rental marketplaces and distributed training networks, have seen valuations swing significantly based on these kinds of infrastructure announcements. A ¥2 trillion centralized data center project represents both competition and validation for decentralized alternatives.

Sovereign wealth funds moving aggressively into AI infrastructure signals where traditional finance expects the next decade of returns. Mubadala manages hundreds of billions in assets with a mandate to diversify the UAE's economy beyond oil. Japan's broader ¥32.7 trillion infrastructure plan by fiscal year 2035 represents a fundamental reorientation of Japan's technology economy, occurring as the country liberalizes its approach to digital assets and Web3 businesses.

The principal risk remains execution. A ¥2 trillion data center in a prefecture with limited existing tech infrastructure faces construction timelines, permitting challenges, and the basic physics of power generation. Mubadala has not yet confirmed its involvement publicly.
