The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has granted early termination of its antitrust review for Elon Musk's proposed acquisition of Mesh Optical Technologies, clearing the transaction to proceed. According to WEEX News, which first reported the development, the FTC approved the transaction on June 25 under its Hart-Scott-Rodino merger review process, with official FTC records listing Elon Musk as the acquiring party and Mesh Optical Technologies Corporation as the company being acquired.

The FTC's early termination means the agency ended its waiting period before the statutory deadline, indicating that regulators did not identify competition concerns requiring a more extensive investigation. While early termination does not represent an endorsement of a transaction, it allows the parties to proceed unless other legal or regulatory issues arise.

Mesh Optical Technologies develops high-speed optical networking hardware designed for artificial intelligence data centers. The startup focuses on optical transceivers that convert electrical signals into optical signals, enabling faster communication between servers while reducing power consumption and latency compared with conventional copper-based interconnects. Such technologies have become increasingly important as AI developers deploy ever-larger computing clusters.

According to WEEX News, Mesh was founded by former SpaceX engineers and emerged from stealth earlier this year after raising approximately $50 million in Series A financing led by Thrive Capital. The company's flagship networking technology is intended to improve the efficiency of AI infrastructure by increasing bandwidth while lowering energy demands inside modern data centers.

The acquisition fits into Musk's broader investments in AI computing infrastructure. SpaceX has recently expanded its role in AI computing services, and industry observers have noted that integrating optical networking technology could help improve the efficiency of high-performance data centers supporting artificial intelligence workloads. TechCrunch reported that the technology could benefit both terrestrial data centers and future computing infrastructure projects associated with SpaceX.

From a competition policy perspective, the transaction received relatively limited regulatory scrutiny because Mesh operates in a specialized segment of networking hardware rather than a dominant market position. The FTC's decision to grant early termination suggests the agency concluded the acquisition was unlikely to substantially lessen competition under U.S. antitrust law based on the information reviewed during the merger notification process.

The transaction comes amid heightened regulatory attention to consolidation across artificial intelligence markets. U.S. antitrust authorities have increasingly examined acquisitions involving AI infrastructure, semiconductor technologies, cloud computing, and digital platforms as policymakers evaluate whether market concentration could affect innovation or competition in rapidly developing technology sectors. Although this transaction proceeded without a prolonged investigation, it occurs within a broader environment of increased regulatory oversight of AI-related mergers.

Neither Musk nor Mesh Optical Technologies has publicly disclosed the financial terms of the acquisition. According to official FTC records, the agency's review has concluded with the granting of early termination, clearing the way for the parties to complete the transaction subject to any remaining closing conditions.
