Texas-based data-center operator breaks ground on AI data center at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, leveraging adjacent nuclear-power generation capacity.
Texas-based Aligned Data Centers, a developer and operator of data centers, recently broke ground on a new 2-gigawatt data center campus in Shippingport.
Known as Project Phoenix, the campus comprises three facilities within the Shippingport Industrial Park. The site sits adjacent to a former coal power plant currently being redeveloped into an advanced natural gas energy campus. Rather than relying on the local electrical grid, the facility will operate using a dedicated onsite power source.
“Project Phoenix represents the future of responsible data center development,” Aligned CEO Andrew Schaap said. “The project is a legacy reimagined that transforms a dormant industrial site into a foundational asset for the local community. Beyond delivering critical infrastructure for our customers, this investment establishes a powerful new economic hub for Western Pennsylvania and creates long-term prosperity for local workers and the community.”
The project is expected to satisfy the region’s demand for digital infrastructure, return excess power capacity to the grid, and drive an estimated $10 billion in regional economic investment.
During the construction phase, the project will support approximately 3,000 jobs. Once completed, an estimated 640 employees will work on the campus full time.
Aligned incorporated local feedback to guide the campus’s design, planning, and construction.
