Amazon Web Services (AWS) is planning a new data center campus in Ohio. As reported by Local12 and BizJournal, the company is targeting a 601-acre site outside Cincinnati, spanning Madison Township and St. Clair Township in Butler County, just south of Trenton. The largely undeveloped parcel lies along Wayne Madison Road and Hawkins Road, near Augspurger Road and the Great Miami River, and is currently undergoing annexation into Trenton.

AWS aims to construct 18 buildings on the site, each measuring approximately 220,000 square feet (20,440 square meters), bringing the total footprint to 3.96 million square feet (367,895 square meters). The location benefits from proximity to a Duke Energy substation and the utility’s 692-megawatt gas-powered Madison Power plant.

The proposal emerges amid heightened local scrutiny over data center growth. In June, Butler County officials approved a six-month moratorium on new data center developments after six townships under the county’s zoning jurisdiction—Hanover, Lemon, Madison, Milford, Oxford, and Ross—petitioned the board for a temporary ban. The city of Trenton acquired its portion of the site, a 164-acre farmstead in Madison Township, in October 2025. According to city officials, the full extent of Amazon’s development plans was not known at the time of the purchase.

Regional industrial activity continues to accelerate nearby. Prologis is developing a four-building campus adjacent to Amazon’s proposed site. Construction on the first of four 220,000-square-foot (20,438-square-meter) buildings could begin later this year, targeting a 2028 launch, with all four expected to be completed by 2029. Citing local officials, press reports indicate Amazon will serve as the campus’ end user. Elsewhere in Butler County, industrial development firm Logistix received planning approval in 2024 for a separate data center project in Hamilton.

This expansion reinforces AWS’s growing footprint across Ohio. The cloud provider already operates its US East region in the state, supported by three availability zones, each containing at least one data center and potentially multiple facilities. In late 2024, AWS committed to investing $23 billion in Ohio by 2030. Beyond the Cincinnati area, the company maintains existing data centers in Franklin and Licking counties and is advancing plans for a five-building campus in New Albany. AWS has also previously expressed interest in Pickaway County, outlined a $2 billion data center campus in Sunbury, and announced a planned facility in Fayette County in southern Ohio. News of the Fayette County data centers first surfaced in November last year, following the company’s acquisition of 590 acres in Jefferson Township in August 2025; local filings suggest the campus could become operational in 2026. Earlier this year, AWS secured approval for another Ohio campus in Marysville, and in October 2025, it obtained a tax incentive for a $3 billion data center in Sidney. Meanwhile, development efforts in Wilmington have reportedly stalled.
