Central processing units, once considered outdated in the face of artificial intelligence, are experiencing renewed importance due to the rise of agentic AI. Historically, CPUs served as a computer's "brain" managing activity, speed, and capabilities, but when artificial intelligence emerged, graphics processing units proved better suited for running AI models, performing technical calculations faster and more efficiently. This advantage made Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) the "AI chip king," delivering substantial returns to investors. However, the emergence of task-oriented AI agents has fundamentally changed compute needs. Because AI agents perform consecutive general-purpose tasks, CPUs with their fewer powerful cores are the ideal fit for running them, creating what Nvidia's head of AI infrastructure describes as CPUs "becoming the bottleneck in terms of growing out this AI and agentic workflow."

Nvidia is positioning itself to profit from this shift. The company recently boasted about successfully deploying Grace CPUs in Meta Platforms Inc.'s (META) data centers through a partnership that began last month, with the CPUs improving performance per watt. At the Nvidia GTC AI conference, the company revealed its new 88-core Vera data center CPUs, which deliver 50% performance gains over traditional CPUs. Nvidia also announced its new Vera CPU Rack, which integrates up to 256 liquid-cooled CPUs into a single rack for CPU-centric workloads, improving core sustainability and enabling twice the energy efficiency.

According to Bank of America, the CPU market could more than double by 2030, rising from $27 billion in 2025 to $60 billion. This explosive growth reflects broader constraints across the AI infrastructure landscape. CPUs require raw materials for construction, memory to function, and energy to operate in data centers. Beyond CPUs, the AI Revolution's scaling depends on enormous quantities of copper, electricity, and memory chips—all three of which are facing growing constraints. These shortages are expected to reshape the entire investment landscape as the industry confronts what analysts describe as a "market shock" likely to trigger "a massive rotation of capital away from today's dominant tech names – like Nvidia – and toward companies that supply AI's physical needs."

While Nvidia remains "a spectacular, industry-leading company," its position as the obvious investment choice to ride the CPU demand wave does not guarantee it will be the most profitable. The company is currently trading at a spectacularly high valuation, which puts investors in a vulnerable position. As the AI Revolution's constraints become impossible to ignore, investment opportunities may lie with the companies supplying the raw materials, energy, and infrastructure components essential to AI's expansion rather than with chip manufacturers themselves.
