Workhorse Group announced its entry into the mobile AI data center market with a containerized product expected to reach
Workhorse Group, Inc., headquartered in the Detroit area and trading on NASDAQ under the ticker WKHS, announced on July 28, 2026 its intent to develop a turnkey, compute-ready, containerized mobile AI data center. The new product is designed to meet localized mobile AI infrastructure needs for distributed deployment applications worldwide. The company plans to manufacture these units at its commercial-scale plant in Union City, Indiana, capitalizing on existing engineering, software, testing, and supply-chain capabilities.
According to Grand View Research, the market for containerized data centers could reach 41 billion dollars by 2031. Demand for edge computing, which containerized data centers enable, is being driven by deployment speed and site flexibility, 5G rollout and edge and AI workloads, disaster recovery and continuity, energy efficiency and sustainability regulations, and demand from telecom, IT, and banking and financial services industries.
The initial containerized design is expected to feature liquid-to-liquid cooling, isolated server racks, a separate climate-controlled operator zone with two workstations, integrated uninterruptible power supply and battery backup power, a fire suppression system, advanced monitoring for safety and security, and the ability to use multiple sources of external power. Workhorse intends to pursue a partnership-based go-to-market approach with supplier partnerships with final data center developers. The company is targeting 2027 for the start of initial production and commercial deliveries.
CEO Scott Griffith stated that the expansion into this segment builds on capabilities from the company's merger late last year and supports the vision to build the new Workhorse as an industrial technology company. Griffith noted that the company already manufactures highly reliable mobile platforms in the form of electric medium-duty commercial vehicles. He added that the new product line could provide sources of revenue and cash flow while helping to drive down production costs for the company's electric trucks.
The company possesses engineering competencies in power electronics, thermal management, ruggedized enclosures, mobile connectivity, vibration isolation, and embedded systems applicable to containerized mobile AI data center platforms. Workhorse's flexible, low-cost Indiana manufacturing facility can accommodate high-mix, low-volume production, custom configurations, and rapid iteration, with design-test-validation cycles intended to translate customer requirements into product improvements within weeks.
Workhorse has also continued engineering and design work on modular chassis and cab chassis products, with production expected to begin in late 2027. The company will provide further updates on both its commercial vehicle line and new product line during its second quarter earnings call scheduled for August 13, 2026.
