Artificial intelligence has a massive appetite for electricity, and South Australia is stepping up to meet it. ASX-listed clean energy company 1414 Degrees has announced a major agreement to build a huge AI data centre campus near Port Augusta.

The company has signed a Heads of Agreement with an Australian data centre operator to develop up to 1 gigawatt of AI infrastructure at its Aurora Energy Precinct—1,000 megawatts of processing capacity backed by local solar generation and grid-scale battery storage.

The biggest constraint on training next-generation AI models is not GPU supply, but finding enough firm, clean power to keep thousands of high-performance chips running continuously. Training large language models requires immense electricity, and clusters of tens of thousands of modern GPUs generate massive thermal loads that drain power grids faster than traditional cloud workloads.

Data centre developers globally are hunting for sites with three critical ingredients: heavy power capacity, fast grid connectivity, and high-volume cooling water. 1414 Degrees sits on a goldmine in South Australia that ticks every box.

The Aurora Energy Precinct spans 15.8 square kilometres near Port Augusta, offering up to 900 MW of solar generation potential, an approved 140 MW / 280 MWh battery energy storage system, high-voltage transmission lines, and existing fibre and water access.

Building out a full gigawatt does not happen overnight. The partnership outlines a phased approach that allows compute hardware to deploy rapidly rather than waiting years for major transmission upgrades.

Under the agreement, the Australian data centre operator receives exclusive access to an initial 40-hectare plot. Development unfolds across three phases as generation and transmission infrastructure scale up.

Phase one deploys an initial 17 MW starter campus using a recently announced 33kV grid connection, allowing the partnership to deploy early capacity and begin generating revenue immediately. Phase two expands to a 200 MW anchor campus once the larger 275kV transmission line comes online, drawing directly from Aurora's co-located solar and battery assets. Phase three represents the ultimate vision, expanding toward 1,000 MW as additional solar generation and long-duration thermal storage are built out.

The deal employs modular data centre technology rather than monolithic concrete halls that take years to construct and become obsolete. Modular, high-density containerized compute units are designed to operate alongside variable renewable energy and storage systems. They deploy rapidly, scale in blocks, and upgrade or relocate as chip architecture evolves. With AI chips cycling at breakneck pace, this flexibility is a massive competitive advantage.

Responsibilities divide cleanly: 1414 Degrees provides the development site, grid connections, fibre infrastructure, and behind-the-meter renewable power. The data centre partner brings capital, technical designs, and operational capability for high-density AI infrastructure. 1414 Degrees receives long-term revenue from land leases, energy supply agreements, and precinct management.

Both companies are working toward definitive agreements while securing connection approvals from SA Power Networks, ElectraNet, and local authorities.

This partnership arrives as global technology leaders actively search Australia for massive power capacity. Anthropic has publicly stated requirements for 500 MW sites to support future model training. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have committed to powering their data operations with renewable energy, making large, contiguous sites with pre-approved grid connections and co-located renewables in Australia extremely valuable.

South Australia leads globally in renewable energy generation, frequently running on over 70% wind and solar. Matching that clean profile with gigawatt-scale compute land makes the state an exceptionally attractive destination for global tech capital.

For 1414 Degrees, this represents a strategic shift toward co-locating heavy industrial energy users directly at the point of generation, rather than selling solar power back into wholesale markets that often see negative pricing. For the Australian tech ecosystem, local AI training infrastructure is crucial for sovereign capabilities—ensuring researchers, startups, and enterprises have access to low-latency processing without relying entirely on overseas facilities.

This agreement marks one of the most ambitious clean-powered compute projects announced in Australia, pending final contract execution and transmission milestones.
