Nvidia hiring orbital datacenter system architect signals plans for AI infrastructure in space.
Billionaire Elon Musk and companies such as Google are among those discussing the prospect of space-based data centers to address growing demand for artificial intelligence. While space-based data centers remain largely conceptual, Nvidia is positioning itself as an early leader in exploring this new frontier, recently posting a job for an Orbital Datacenter System Architect. The job posting, highlighted in a tweet by space industry researcher Jack Kuhr that garnered nearly one million views, has sparked significant interest in the space.
Nvidia's official job description states: "Nvidia is looking for an Orbital Datacenter Architect to help define and build products for AI in orbit. This is an opportunity to join the leader in AI systems at the inception of a completely new industry." The position requires candidates to hold a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, along with 12 or more years of experience in system architecture and hands-on experience with space systems. Salary will depend on location, experience, and other factors, with annual pay ranging from $224,000 to $356,500.
Nvidia has emphasized its 25-plus years of experience transforming different sectors and its current leadership in AI growth. The company highlighted the potential for space-based data centers in October 2025 through a blog post about Starcloud, an Nvidia-backed startup. According to the post, "space-based data centers will offer 10x lower energy costs and reduce the need for energy consumption on Earth." Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston stated: "In space, you get almost unlimited, low-cost renewable energy," and predicted that "in 10 years, almost all new data centers will be built in space given the potential cost and energy savings."
During Nvidia's fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Jensen Huang cautiously endorsed the concept, noting that "the economics are poor today, but it is going to improve over time." He highlighted that space offers an "abundance of energy" and "plenty of space" for solar-powered AI satellites. Meanwhile, Google is advancing its own "Suncatcher" project, which plans to use solar power to bring data centers to space by 2027, indicating broader industry momentum toward this emerging sector.
