SK Hynix plans to accelerate completion of fourth Yongin fab from 2044 to 2034; Samsung and SK Hynix new semiconductor cluster plan entering final approval stages, driven by explosive AI chip demand.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix's plan to establish a new semiconductor cluster has entered the final discussion stage, according to Kim Yong-bum, policy director at the Korean presidential office, announced June 24. Once finalized, the plan will be formally announced to the public.
The accelerated timeline reflects explosive growth in AI chip demand. Both companies' existing Yongin semiconductor cluster construction will advance significantly from current schedules. SK Hynix plans to build four fabs in Yongin, with the fourth facility's completion date moving from 2044 to 2034—a ten-year acceleration.
For the AI infrastructure buildout, this represents a major capacity expansion from two of the world's leading memory chipmakers. The coordination between Samsung and SK Hynix signals South Korea's strategic response to AI-driven semiconductor demand, positioning the Yongin cluster as a critical supply node for high-bandwidth memory and other AI-optimized components within the next decade.
