Australia's green energy developers project $155 billion data center investment boom driven by AI workload migration.
Major renewable energy investors have backed Australia's data centre boom as beneficial for net zero, colliding with growing opposition from community and environmental campaigners who fear the power-hungry facilities will destabilise the grid and lock in fossil fuel dependence.
Plans for dozens of new data centres—buildings filled with server racks that store and transmit online data—face intensifying scrutiny across Australia, largely due to their vast around-the-clock electricity and water demands for high-intensity computing and cooling systems. Critics worry that rapid expansion, without strict oversight, could force continued reliance on coal-fired and natural gas plants beyond their planned closure dates. The Greens and Greenpeace have called for a moratorium on new approvals.
In a significant intervention, a coalition of major renewable project backers—including Macquarie Asset Management's Aula Energy, French energy giant Engie, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and Andrew Forrest-backed Squadron Energy—declared the tech sector's demand for local data centres a "net benefit" that would fund the next multibillion-dollar wave of wind, solar, and battery storage.
A Clean Energy Investor Group survey of members holding $41 billion in combined Australian renewables projects found that 90 per cent believed data centres would drive new generation capacity through long-term power purchase agreements. "Data centres present a real opportunity for unlocking a new wave of clean energy investment," said the group's chief executive, Richie Merzian.
Australia has 162 operating data centres consuming about 2 per cent of eastern seaboard electricity demand today. The Australian Energy Market Operator projects this could quadruple to nearly 10 per cent by 2050. The data centre investment pipeline is estimated at $155 billion.
The tech industry reframes massive power requirements as an asset, arguing that corporate capital can fund and accelerate the energy transition rather than destabilise it. Operators insist facilities should be viewed as active "grid participants" capable of providing long-term demand signals and injecting vital private capital into clean energy investment.
Merzian cautioned that regulators must ensure expansion "must not be used as an excuse" to delay coal-fired power station closures. Investors signalled support for policy settings requiring data centres to source "most or all" electricity from renewable generation.
State and federal energy ministers are meeting this month to consider strict new obligations for data centre owners before construction approval, potentially including requirements to strike offtake deals for enough new energy capacity to offset their power consumption. Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen said all states except Queensland have agreed data centres should invest in additional renewables and firming projects in their state to fully compensate for demand.
"Data centres are one of the biggest drivers of new energy demand—we're acting to make them an asset to the energy grid, not a strain," Bowen said. "If data centres want to benefit from Australia's energy grid, we think they should do their bit to strengthen it—and it's clear that the overwhelming majority of states agree."
Australia ranked second globally for data centre investment inflows in 2025. Microsoft has committed $25 billion to Australian data centres, and Amazon Web Services another $20 billion. Despite the windfall, community campaigners and crossbench MPs remain sceptical, questioning how much benefit will reach everyday consumers versus global technology giants leasing the buildings, and warning that promised cheaper bills and jobs must be weighed against strain on water and power resources.
