Reliance Industries, the Indian industrial conglomerate headed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is embarking on an ambitious project to construct the world's largest data centre. The facility will be located in Jamnagar, in the state of Gujarat, and will feature an announced capacity of 3 gigawatts—a figure that exceeds the performance of all hyperscale data centres built to date in both the USA and China. With a gigawatt representing one billion watts, this 3-gigawatt installation would provide enough power to supply nearly three million people, compared to approximately one million people per gigawatt.
According to Bloomberg, Reliance has partnered with Nvidia, the world leader in AI-optimized processors, to execute this colossal project. Nvidia's chips will enable the centre to process immense quantities of data and run particularly complex algorithms, positioning it as a critical infrastructure for advanced artificial intelligence applications.
Demonstrating awareness of environmental concerns, Mukesh Ambani has committed to powering the building primarily through renewable energies. An adjacent energy complex will produce solar, wind, and green hydrogen power, supplying all the electricity needed to operate the centre continuously 24 hours a day.
The data centre is designed to meet the growing demand for AI solutions, both domestically within India and internationally. Today's artificial intelligence models are extremely "compute resource hungry," necessitating the construction of new infrastructures that are more powerful than ever before. This initiative also aims to strengthen India's competitive position on the global AI stage, a goal that aligns with similar efforts elsewhere, notably the Trump administration's Stargate project in the USA, which also involves the construction of several huge data centres.
