Hut 8 Corp affirms its commitment to responsible data center development and welcomes Texas Governor Greg Abbott's direc
Hut 8 Corp, an energy infrastructure platform integrating power, digital infrastructure, and compute for next-generation energy-intensive technologies, today welcomed the directive issued by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. The company stated that the principles in the directive align with its own development model, which emphasizes responsible power and resource planning, proactive management of local impacts, and early engagement with regulators and stakeholders.
Hut 8 currently operates approximately 1.5 gigawatts of utility capacity across operational and development sites in Texas, including large-scale behind-the-meter projects at King Mountain and Vega. The company's primary focus is Beacon Point, an AI data center campus under development in Nueces County that the company describes as reflecting its commitment to responsible execution.
CEO Asher Genoot said: "We applaud Governor Abbott for setting a clear standard that data center development must strengthen Texas communities. Responsible growth requires developers to think beyond the data center to the grid that powers their projects, the local resources around them, and the communities that host them. That perspective has shaped how Hut 8 has built and operated in Texas since 2022, and we believe it will only grow in importance as the next generation of digital infrastructure is built across the state."
The company has engaged extensively with community stakeholders throughout the Coastal Bend region during Beacon Point's development, including neighboring residents, local government, schools, and regional economic development organizations. Aaron Bowman, CEO of the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation, praised Hut 8's community engagement, noting that before construction began the company was meeting with residents living closest to Beacon Point and answering questions face to face, while also supporting community traditions like Buc Days.
Calallen Independent School District Superintendent Scot Hafley stated that the district has focused on understanding the project's impact on students, families, and taxpayers, and that Hut 8 has been willing to answer questions directly and discuss infrastructure, water, safety, and workforce opportunities. Del Mar College President and CEO Mark Escamilla highlighted that investments of this scale create pathways for students in high-demand fields such as electrical systems, HVAC, industrial maintenance, and data infrastructure, and that Hut 8 has engaged directly with faculty and workforce programs to align training with future job creation.
Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper said: "Hut 8 has made it clear that they want to be a good neighbor and an active partner here in Nueces County. We appreciate their willingness to invest in our community and support the organizations and people who call Nueces County home."
