Anthropic partners with Macquarie Asset Management and GIC to establish Theseus Infrastructure, a dedicated vehicle for AI data center development and ownership.
Anthropic has announced a strategic partnership with Australian asset manager Macquarie Asset Management and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC to establish Theseus Infrastructure, a new company dedicated to developing large-scale AI data centers. The partnership marks a significant commitment to securing computing infrastructure as AI companies intensify their competition for resources.
Under the partnership structure, Macquarie and GIC will provide the majority of equity capital for each project, while Anthropic has undertaken an unusual commitment to cover any increases in consumer electricity rates resulting from the construction and operation of the facilities. This provision reflects recognition that surging power demand could strain local communities. The three parties have not disclosed specific investment amounts or project scope.
Anthropic had previously announced $50 billion in investment plans for 2025, targeting custom data centers across multiple U.S. locations including Texas and New York. The company has already secured $35 billion in financing from Google to support long-term semiconductor leases across five data centers, positioning itself for an anticipated initial public offering.
The move mirrors the broader infrastructure race underway in the AI industry. OpenAI has launched Stargate, a large-scale infrastructure joint venture, reflecting intensifying competition to secure computing resources. By developing its own infrastructure through Theseus Infrastructure, Anthropic aims to reduce reliance on cloud service providers while meeting rapidly expanding demand for generative AI. The partnership demonstrates a strategy of leveraging financial partners' capital while maintaining operational responsibility—enabling faster development while minimizing friction with local communities concerned about power costs.
